How I Made My First Affiliate Commission After 6 Months of Blogging
6 months ago I started this blog. After nearly 50 posts, I finally saw something I’ve wanted for so long.
My first affiliate commission, and it was there for a whole month before I saw it.
And anyone who follows my posts knows how much blogging can affect your mental health.

But this was my first goal, and I achieved it.
Here’s exactly how it happened, what I did to set it up, and what it actually means.
My Blogging Journey Before the Commission
Month 6 of blogging is where things start to take another turn.
It’s supposed to be the start of Google rewarding you. But to me, what happened was the opposite.
Impressions dropped, visitors also dropped, and I was seriously considering taking a break.
I stopped publishing two times a week and started posting one, because everything felt too much.
I was still focusing on Pinterest, but it was feeling like an effort instead of something I truly enjoyed doing.
And this is where most people think about quitting. And so did I.
And then I opened my affiliate dashboard.
How the Commission Happened
Someone found my blog. I don’t know exactly which post they landed on, or how they found it, whether it was from Pinterest or Google.
But someone found it. Someone purchased an eligible Hostinger product through something I wrote about.
The commission tracked at $20.06.
That’s it. No viral post, no sudden traffic spike, and no money spent on ads.
Just someone trusting the recommendation I made enough to act on it.
5 Lessons I Learned From My First Affiliate Sale
Start Before You Feel Ready
When I started, I always thought about feeling ready before applying to any affiliate program.
But I didn’t resist the urge to do it anyway. And the moment I decided to write a post that was worth placing an affiliate link, I applied to the program.
And those links I placed in my first and second month are still active. Having those links live from the beginning meant they were already working by the time my traffic started growing.
By the moment I got to my 6th month, my posts were already getting traffic, and that helped me to get my first commission.
Don’t wait too long until you feel established before promoting something. If you feel like it’s really worth it, then let it grow over time.
Only Promote What You Use
I use Hostinger. This blog was made on it, from the domain to my whole website.
When I recommend something, I only choose it from things I’m actually using and trust.
This matters more than most people realize. Your readers can tell the difference between an honest opinion and something promoted purely for the commission.
By recommending something you use, you’re proving trust, and this is more important than any viral post.
If you wouldn’t recommend something for free, don’t recommend it for money.
Natural Placement Beats Aggressive Promotion
I don’t promote Hostinger in every post I publish.
I only mention it where it actually makes sense. If I’m talking about mindset, I won’t be recommending Hostinger;z it’s not the right tool for that topic.
This is where most people fail. They try to force their affiliate links in the most random ways possible, just for it to be there.
By doing this, you’re ruining the trust of your readers, and later on, even if they felt interested, they won’t have the same interest in your guides.
If you want to place affiliate links, create content around that; don’t do the opposite.
Patience Is the Most Underrated Skill in Affiliate Marketing
There was a time when I checked my Amazon affiliate dashboard all day just to see if I had any clicks.
But this only ruins your confidence and your motivation.
When you’re starting, it’s normal not to see any clicks for months, but by clicking every single day, you’re getting overwhelmed and more likely to quit.
It will take time to make this work. I never looked at my Hostinger dashboard, not even once.
Then I happened to click on it, and I saw the commission, after a whole month.
I’m sure that if I had seen it before, I would have checked it every day to see if it was approved.
That was what happened the moment I found out.
You Only Need One Conversion to Change Everything
I told you I was feeling overwhelmed and tired of writing for no one.
But the moment I saw the commission, I forgot everything else. Finally, my effort and all the hours I’ve been working were worth it.
I got so excited that I almost started crying, not because of the money, but because it’s real.
Someone actually trusted my opinion and bought something because of me.
That feeling is irreplaceable. And the moment you see that commission, you know that if one person bought it, then others can also do the same.
That mental shift is worth more than $20.
What I'd Do Differently If I Started Again
Create More Content Around Products I’m Using
I waited too long before writing content with affiliate potential.
And even though it doesn’t seem much, it was only after my 3rd month of blogging.
I know that building trust through non-promotional content is essential and increases trust in your blog, but avoiding making business posts will also affect your progress.
I could’ve written more blog posts, whether it was tips, mistakes, or even guides.
Trust the Process
Like I keep saying, it takes time. There were many times when I didn’t trust myself and my work.
The feeling of quitting was harder than anything else I’ve faced. And most people don’t resist this phase and quit before something actually happens.
If you quit after 3 months, you won’t know if you’re going to succeed.
If I had quit in my 3rd month, I would still think that making money on the internet was impossible, like most people.
Focus on Fewer Programs
For those who are starting, the Amazon Affiliate program is a good base to start out.
You’ll be accepted without too much effort, and it will help you to have some fundamentals of how Affiliate Marketing actually works.
I applied to 7 programs; I was rejected by 5 of them. But in reality, those programs weren’t being used by me.
So, instead of applying and getting anxious about rejection, I should’ve studied more about what I use and trust before applying to anything I thought was worth pursuing.
Find 2 or 3 programs that fit your content and focus on them. Just because some programs are easy to apply doesn’t mean you should apply for them.

Why This $20 Commission Means More Than The Money
This $20 won’t change my life. I don’t even think I can withdraw it yet.
But that’s not the point. The point is that my blog is actually working.
All this hard work paid off. I know that it’s real, and if I can get one commission, then I can get more and more.
It proves that these 6 months of silence weren’t wasted.
Every post I published when nobody was reading. Every piece of content I created on social media that had zero likes.
All of this led to a moment I almost didn’t stay for.
What You Should Take From This
If you’re building a blog and haven’t made your affiliate commission yet, I want you to keep going.
Keep working on your blog, promote it on social media, and improve every time you publish something new.
Celebrate Small Wins
Even if you only have 5 readers per day, it’s a win. When you started, you had none.
If your AdSense is only giving you 5 cents per day, celebrate it. Some people still haven’t been approved.
Focusing on small wins helps the momentum, and it was what helped me go through every hard phase I had.
Be Patient
It takes time, not days or weeks. For some, not even a couple of months.
But if you’re working hard, improving day after day, and showing up, then your time will come.
I can’t promise you when it will happen, but if you quit, I can guarantee you that it won’t.
Final Thoughts
Six months. 50 posts. More than 400 Pinterest pins.
This is what it took me to get my first affiliate commission.
It doesn’t seem much compared to those you see online.
But I started from zero—no traffic, no audience, no income, and no proof that any of this would work.
This may not be the same as what YouTube promotes. But it’s the reality of a blogger.
If you’re in your 3rd or 5th month and didn’t see results, wait… I was you a few weeks ago.
And I’m glad that I didn’t quit.
The only way you don’t see results is if you quit right away.
You only lose when you stop publishing.
